Ear aches are a pretty common thing-especially in children. Unfortunately, mine was accompanied by vertigo that was keeping me up at night. Homeopathy absolutely has an answer-actually several answers! If you are struggling with how to combat these pesky health fail moments, read on.
It hit me in the middle of the night. I woke up with the sensation that I was spinning through space. I felt like I had just taken three turns on the tilt-a-whirl at the county fair, except I hadn't. I was tucked into my bed with the sound of a winter storm stirring outside my window.
I counted sheep as I tried to go back to sleep and upon realizing that wasn't going to happen, I got up to go to my homeopathy cabinet. Reaching for the Veratrum album I reassured myself that the spinning would soon stop and I would be able to resume my slumber. Crawling back into bed the spinning continued but the Veratrum seemed to have enough effect that I was able to finish the night with no further issues.
In the morning I was fine. I didn't feel dizzy at all and went about my day. That night however, the spinning started AGAIN and I tried my go-to remedy for vertigo, Veratrum album. Again, it acted enough to get me to sleep but not as expected.
Sometimes when you ARE the homeopath, you can be a little slow to deal well with your own ailments. This continued for a week and for some reason, pay close attention until I awoke in the night with accompanying pain in my ear. Aha! AN EAR INFECTION!! Why didn't I think of that sooner?
I rushed to my cabinet again, pulled out the Hepar sulph 200C for the infection and Belladonna 3C for the pain. Immediately the spinning stopped, the pain closely following on its heels and blessed sleep was accomplished. I took this combo a few times a day for the next three days and backed off to once a day for almost a week before stopping. Problem solved!
About a week later though, the spinning in the night happened again. No pain, just spinning. I took Hepar sulph thinking the infection had returned and it had no effect. Hmmmm... Weird. (Belladonna is a huge pain remedy, so even though I knew it can work on its own for an ear infection, I didn't think to take it by itself. Proof that even years of study doesn't always mean you choose well when YOU are the one who is sick!)
The third night I had an epiphany. What if it was the BELLADONNA that had acted on the vertigo and not the Hepar sulph? I was looking for a root cause (ear infection) when I should have been following the symptoms. I opened my repertory and there it was, Belladonna for NIGHTTIME vertigo. I immediately grabbed a dose of Belladonna and the spinning stopped. I took it before bed for three more nights and it hasn't returned. (It is now May and this happened back in January.)
Hepar sulph and Belladonna are both great remedies for earaches but sometimes you have to get out the books to drill down when you have symptoms that aren't responding as expected. And if you have a CHILD who is struggling with symptoms, it can be even harder. So here are some remedies to have on hand in addition to the two I mentioned for those pesky earaches. (Yes, you CAN defeat an earache without antibiotics! AND, after a few successful times, get rid of them for good!)
So here they are: Aconitum napellus 30C for when the issue comes on quickly and is accompanied by a fever. Pulsatilla 30C for when the child is weepy and needy, even clingy. Four remedies to keep in your cabinet that will overcome earaches and a WHOLE lot more.
